The Butcher Shop

Originally known as Phillip Harrington’s butcher shop on Sovereign street Clonakilty (now Pearse St.) in the 1880’s. A local woman by the name Johanna O’Brien began making black pudding for Harrington’s at her home in Sams Cross Clonakilty in order to subsidise the household income. Once retired Johanna left her recipe with Phillip Harrington who took over the making of the popular black pudding.

The recipe including the secret spice mix was carefully handed down to Philip’s family and for over a century, the Blackpudding was made by Dan Harrington, Con O’Callaghan and Paddy Allman. Not only was it sold from the butcher shop it was also sent in parcels to Clonakilty people both at home and abroad. In 1969, the butcher shop was sold Patrick McSweeny and in 1976 it was taken over by his nephew Edward Twomey.

Thankfully Edward decided to keep this slice of history alive. Realising the huge potential for the product, Edward knew the importance of guarding the secret spice recipe for this reason either he or his wife Colette, were the only people to mix the spice. This all led to the creation of what is today know as Clonakilty Food Company with a product range that has expanded to include Clonakilty White Pudding, Clonakilty Sausages, Clonakilty Rashers and most recently Clonakilty Veggie Pudding. Sadly, Edward passed away in 2005 and his wife Colette took over the running of the business.


Today Edward Twomey Butchers is still located on 16 Pearse St. Clonakilty and the spice mix recipe is still a well-kept secret, only know to owner Colette Twomey. Production of the Blackpudding eventually outgrew the butcher shop and the making was moved to Twomey’s farm on the edge of Clonakilty town. In 1992 production was moved to a facility in Little Island on the outskirts of Cork City until 2017 when the Blackpudding finally came home to Clonakilty with the new production facility located just down the road from the Butcher shop. 

Edward Twomey’s is a fine traditional butchers shop which does much more than sell the iconic Blackpudding. We do everything else well too, offering a full range of fresh locally sourced meats and meat products to the people of West Cork, all of a very high standard.
